John Guarin

While growing up in the northern California town of Vallejo, John played as much soccer as he could.  He enjoys many other sports and virtually all outdoor activities, though soccer has always been his true passion.

While playing his club ball with the Vallejo Rowdies from the U-8 level thru U-16, John found a home in the defense.  There, he lettered four years on the Hogan High School Varsity Soccer team, and was selected to train with the  norcal ODP program  achieving multiple appearances on the state team alongside regional tryouts.

In college,  after redshirting as a freshman, he secured a starting role for his next four years of college soccer with the 2nddivision Chico State University Squad, advancing once to the NCAA playoffs and co-captaining the team his senior year.

Following his love of the game and competition, he played semi-pro ball for four years with the Chico Rooks in the USISL.   Looking for more, he moved to Germany to play for a year in the lower divisions while trying to sign with a bigger club.  Only finding moderate success, he returned home to California to play in 1997.   There, he was quickly whisked away to Hawaii by some friends to play for the Hawaii Tsunami in their final season in the USISL and the rest is history.

On Oahu with the Tsunami he met a Maui girl, and fell in love with her and the Hawaiian culture.   He began as the head coach for Kalaheo High School, training the team for three years while capturing one OIA Championship title.   During this time he also worked with the ODP program on Oahu both in selecting players and taking a state team to the regional camp as the assistant coach.

Settling here on Maui in 2003, he and his wife have been blessed with two children, a home, and a place in this wonderful community.  In 2014, John started coaching again as the Seabury Hall Boys Varsity head coach claiming two MIL Division II titles in his first two years.   He  is excited for the opportunity to extend his coaching footprint and grow with the Maui United Soccer Club.

“This club, as I have observed over the past 12 years is fully committed to developing quality players and preparing them for a future in the game.  I’ve noted how this club has centered itself with a detailed and clear path outlined from the keiki level upward into college.  Maui United hosts an innovative and consistent clubwide coaching philosophy which is delivered by an experienced and dedicated coaching staff.  I consider myself fortunate to become a part of this ohana.”
